This typeface was created during the second phase of the Matsumoto Mojijuku organized by Mr. Osamu Torinoumi and Matsumoto Typography. The design of the Mincho typeface for kana, which is currently one of the mainstream Japanese layouts, was influenced by the metal typeface for kanji characters imported from Shanghai during the early Meiji period (1868–1912). Since the style of writing languages changes with the influence of technology and foreign languages of each era, it has now become difficult to read the renmen (hiragana are written continuously and connected without breaks), kuzushiji (cursive style), and variant kana that were dominant until the end of the Edo period (1603–1867). In this production, I re-analyzed the renmen script as it was used in woodblock printing in the Edo period and incorporated the algorithm into the font specifications. Although it is still unclear how I will be able to incorporate this into the actual design, I am grateful that my experimental efforts have been so well received.
