Vogue Brasil Sans & Serif is a dualistic headline typeface family crafted for Globo Condé Nast and Vogue Brasil to coincide with the magazine’s redesign in early 2022. Both sans-serif and serif styles are encapsulated by two polarising ideas: ‘vernacular’ and ‘elegance’. Our challenge was to marry these ideas, creating an authentic outcome that embodied Vogue’s iconic brand with the rich cultural and typographic heritage of Brasil.
Designed with versatility in mind, both Vogue Brasil Sans and Serif support a wide range of typographic circumstances and playful ‘fit-for-purpose’ moments. With stylistic sets informed by a comprehensive analysis of Brasil’s typographic landscape, both styles are equipped to give the Vogue Brasil team maximum creative flexibility when using the typeface family.
Being a Portuguese-speaking country many letterforms use diacritics – these marks are added to letters to change their pronunciation or meaning. They can appear above, below, or through letters, and are used in many writing systems, including Latin, Greek, and Cyrillic scripts. Some examples of diacritics are the acute accent (É or Ó), the tilde (Ñ), and the cedilla (Ç).
Each style has a set of ‘cap-height diacritics’ which fit snugly into the same space as a regular capital letter, to help the Vogue Brasil team navigate tightly spaced headlines, pull quotes and other large set copy. Moments of unexpected contrast are also encouraged within each style’s set of ‘geometric forms’ and individual ‘alternate letterforms’.
Since launch, the typeface family has garnered praise from Vogue Brasil’s team, readers and the global creative community. We’re honoured to accept the highest accolade of a Tokyo TDC Award.
