This is the catalog for my first private exhibition at a gallery. The title of the exhibition was “印象,” which means “impression” in English. “印象” combines the Chinese characters for “symbol” and “form.” The English tile was “IMPRINT/IMPRESS” and the subtitle was “It’s only a paper moon.” The subtitle is borrowed from an old jazz number. The catalog is a compilation of previous works and new works, with each page featuring one work. I struck the back of each catalog with a mallet to crush it down and make it hard. Impressions fade with time, but some remain. Though just a bundle of paper, it can become the real moon (sphere) if you believe hard enough. Since receiving recognition from Tokyo TDC, I have grown taller on the revelation that people believe in me. I want to steel myself to produce ever better work going forward. I am grateful to so many people, but I would like to thank the photographer Yoichi Nagano in particular for traveling several times to Mito to patiently photograph each work.
