WEA custom fonts for Weekendavisen, Danish weekly newspaper.
Delivery: Custom font system for Danish weekly newspaper Weekendavisen. New masthead (redesign) New Sans for headlines and text, New Display for headlines, New serif fonts for body copy. Every single typographic detail and font component of the newspaper was custom designed including the newspaper crest used in the masthead. 47 fonts in total.
Brief: Design custom fonts + masthead (including design restoration of crest + lettering) for the entire newspaper with an aim to increase legibility and to strengthen the newspaper brand across all platforms, print, web, mobile.
Solution: We designed fonts directly linked to the typographic heritage of the newspaper. The font system is anchored in the Danish tradition of type with direct references to Knud Valdemar Engelhardt and Gunnar Biilmann Petersens type designs. The final font set consist of Display, Text, Sans and Sans Condensed fonts.
Cultural context: Expertly researched and well-written journalism, every Friday. One of the oldest newspapers in the world, first published 1749. Weekendavisen is the only Danish newspaper still published in the broadsheet format. It is published every Friday with an emphasis on the written word.
