Shonky: The Aesthetics of Awkwardness(Book)

shonky (ˈʃɒŋkɪ ): 1. of dubious integrity or legality; 2. unreliable; unsound (Collins English Dictionary).

Catalogue to accompany group exhibition curated by artist John Walter, winner of Hayward Touring’s 2017 Curatorial Open. All texts in the book are typeset centred, in fourteen different parametrically created typefaces of challenging legibility. Spacing, line length and line spacing have been carefully considered to allow allow the whole to read, stressing the role of macro typography. The catalogue is printed in full colour using fluorescent inks. Every page is overlaid with a letter fragment printed in spot gloss varnish. The flat printing sheets of the book spell out the word ‘Shonky’ in that spot varnish, and were used in the exhibition design.

Fraser Muggeridge studio(UK)
Fraser Muggeridge studio is a graphic design company based in London. Throughout a wide range of formats, from artists’ books and exhibition catalogues to posters, marketing material, exhibitions and websites, the studio prioritises artists’ and writers’ content over the imposition of a signature style. By allowing images and texts to sustain their own intent and impact, each project is approached with typographic form and letterform playing a key role in arriving at a sympathetic yet subtly alluring object.
Fraser Muggeridge founded and is a tutor at Typography Summer School, a week-long programme of typographic study for recent graduates and professionals, held in London (since 2010) and New York (since 2013). He is a visiting lecturer at The University of Reading (since 2003) on the MA Book Design Course and Camberwell College of Art, London, 2nd Year of BA Graphic Design (since 2011).
