Nil “Untitled- Hong Kong”（Experimental work）

“Untitled-Hong Kong” was made after I came back to Hong Kong from London in 2003. For a year staying in a place outside Hong Kong, I just looked like an outsider and found that it is quite weird about the behaviours of the Chinese and Hong Kong people. May be I get used to it before and so did not realize these but after coming back, I found out that the Hong Kong people changed their views towards the people from Mainland China and became very friendly and nice to them. Of course, I finally realized that it’s the money matter that made the Hong Konger suddenly became so friendly. So I started to think about to make a work talking about how the Hong Kong people and the people from Mainland China see or think about each other. It is something related to my feelings about these groups of people and at the same time, their views towards each other. It is a work that talks about the Chinese, the Hong Kong people and Hong Kong.

Tsang, Kin-wah

Born in Guangdong, China in 1976, Tsang Kin-wah moved to Hong Kong in 1982. After graduating from Fine Arts Department of the Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2000, he received a master’s degree from the Camberwell College of Arts, London Institute in 2003 under the British Chevening Postgraduate Scholarship.

Tsangfs works mainly focus on investigating the specific meanings created by combining the swear words with the elegant image and by presenting this as a form of wallpaper to cover and create different site-specific installations. Among these years, he has taken part in various group exhibitions such as “The State of Things” (National Museum of Art, Architecture and Design, Oslo), “Preview”(Fat Galerie, Paris), “30 x 30” (Vertigo Gallery, London), Hong Kong Art Biennial (2001, 2003 and 2005), Dutch Design Week 2005 (Temporary Art Centre, Eindhoven), etc. and has his solo exhibitions “Showcase: Tsang Kin-wah” (Tokyo, 2006), “Wallpaper: Painted Patterns” (Barcelona and Madrid, 2006), “White Cube” (Hong Kong, 2005) and “Space” (Shanghai, 2004) in various cities.

Tsang has received awards likes the 2005 Sovereign Asian Art Prize (Sovereign Art Foundation, 2005), Prize of Excellence (Hong Kong Art Biennial 2001), etc. His works are collected by Sovereign Art Foundation, Museum of Design Zurich (Switzerland), Hong Kong Museum of Art, Camberwell College of Arts (London) and private collectors.
