“Nihongo de Asobo (Let’s Play with Japanese)” (NHK children’s program)

No matter how much effort goes into designing an artwork, if the people commissioning the design, the people making the decisions and those on the receiving end of the design are unable to comprehend it, the design will end up having no impact on the world. Design must always be considered within a relative context. I believe that early childhood education plays an important role in the perception and appreciation of art. I wonder if there are kindergartens and primary schools who take the position that design is something that enriches our lives. I think that children’s educational programs have come to a point where their roles must be reconsidered. As one who is actually involved in the production of early educational programs, I would be very happy if this award serves to spread the fruit of our work to a wider audience. I am very grateful to have been able to work on this production.

Taku Satoh

Born in Tokyo in 1955. Graduated from the Design Department of Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music in 1979 and from its Graduate School in 1981. In the same year he joined Dentsu Inc. He established Taku Satoh Design Office in 1984. His major projects include graphic design alongside merchandise design of Nikka Pure Malt, Lotte Xylitol Gum, Meiji Oishii-Gyunyu, VI for BS Asahi and 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa, planning and art direction of NHK educational program “Let’s play with Japanese”, 

product design, branding and other wide-ranging activities. His publications include “SKELETON” by Rikuyo-sha and a book series “Anatomy of Design” by Bijutsu Shuppan-sha.
