“No Ghost Just a Shell” is a project that was initiated in 1999 by Philippe Parreno and Pierre Huyghe, two of France leading contemporary artists. They acquired the copyright for a figure called ‘Annlee’ and her original image from the Japanese agency K-works, which develops characters for the Japanese Manga industry. They then offered ‘Annlee’ free of charge to a
series of artists, ‘commissioned’ by the initiators, to be used for their ‘own’ stories.
Each of the projects realised with ‘Annlee’ is a “chapter in the history of a sign”, and has a ‘life’ in the context of the individual artists’ activities and within the joint project.
M/M (Paris) have been asked by Philippe Parreno and Pierre Huyghe to design the generic poster for this project. The title “No Ghost Just A Shell” was created by M/M. Subsequently, certains of the artists involved have asked M/M to design specific posters for their episodes as well: Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster’s “Annlee in Anzen-Zone” ; Francois Curlet “Witness Screen” ; Pierre Joseph “Theorie du Trickster”.This posters have appeared in various exhibitions and shows worldwide in numerous galleries and museums, more recently in the Kunsthalle Zurich; at the SF-MOMA, San Francisco Museum Of Modern Art; and at the Van AbbeMuseum in Eindhoven, where they are now part of their contemporary art collection.
