Poster for Ultra Graphics ”Ultra”
This is a piece I did for the opening of our office “Ultra Graphics” in 1996. I wanted to be direct and incorporate its name in the design. I decided the “-tra” in Ultra would be “tiger” (“Tra” or “tora” as it is pronounce in Japanese means “tiger.”), but I couldn’t come up with anything for the “ul-” (pronounced “uru” in Japanese) part. One day, I happened to recall a drawing by Ms. Sato, our receptionist, that she made for our farewell party. It was a handmade mask with tears about to overflow (the onomatopoeia “uru-uru”). We asked her to join the production staff and we were able to complete the project. As the proverb says, “The name is an expression of the body (or “tai”),” but in this case the name became an expression of the typo(graph) (“tai” and “ty”-po. Get it?). We will continue to hone our skills to stay worthy of this award.
