Poster for Japan Culture Center in Paris “Exposition le siécle du design”
This is a sponsorship poster I did for the graphic exhibition held at the Japan Cultural Center in Paris for its formal opening. It is one of several works by competing artists. Just the size of it – vertically oriented double B size – is enough to impress. Belle Epoch paintings and French ballads were some of the things that made me fall in love with Paris when I was younger. I have memories of the Cassandre’s cruise route posters that I used to see then. Ships may be out of style, but those who traveled to Paris before me must have carried back their cultural experiences with them on those long voyages. What used to be a 6-month passage has now been shortened to a 10-hour flight, but my feelings for Paris were greater then, perhaps proportionate to the length of time it took to get there.

Masayoshi Nakajo
Born in Tokyo in 1933. After working at Shiseido Co. and Deska Co., established the Nakajo Design Office in ’61. Awards he received include; Tokyo ADC Members’ Grand Prize, SDA Prize, JAAC Prize Yamana Prize, Package in Japan Gold Prize, JAGDA Masaru Katsumi Prize, Mainichi Design Award, International Trade and Industry Minister’s Prize at All Japan Calendar Exhibition. He won Tokyo TDC Members’ Gold Prize in ’92, ’94 and Bronze Prize in ’96.
